Introduction to Programming with Imagination Toolbox 2015
In this fun, intensive, hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to program 3D games and/or science simulation models using StarLogo Nova, an online educational software tool with a graphical programming interface. If you have never programmed before, this workshop will be a great introduction. For people with prior programming experience, this workshop will provide you with experience in an easy-to-use, powerful programming tool to add to your repertoire. 2015 Dates and Locations (all @ MIT Campus in Cambridge, MA): August 10* Room 56-154 Time: 9am-3pm Cost: $30 per person - covers breakfast, lunch, and all materials. The SA must be produced on letterhead and include date and title of event and names and type of membership/ registration for each individual. It can be e-mailed to carissa.massmabe@gmail.com with "Summer Institute- SA" in the subject line and must be received before individuals can register. Registrants who select the PO/ invoice option who dont have SA will be contacted and removed if SA is not received within 24 hours.

How to register once SA is received

  • MABE will process SA (usually within 48 hours)

Click on the "Pay Offline" button This brings you to the registration form where personal information on each person must be entered. At the end of the form, click on "Send Invoice". 50 minute, six week course. Scent work is an activity that uses your dogs natural abilities. In this activity, your dog already knows what to do; we are just here to help him learn our rules to play the game. Not only do we get to enjoy working with our dogs, the mental exercise of searching and problem-solving is great for calming and relaxing the energetic or hyperactive dog. In this beginner class, we will focus on teaching you how to encourage and develop your dogs natural scenting abilities by using his desire to hunt and his love of toys, food and exercise. Its a great class for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy. Find out how good your dogs nose really is! Bringing a crate for your dog to rest in between his sessions in class is recommended but not required. There must be a four dog minimum in order to run the class. Introductory ESDM Workshop-Boston/Waltham Area
The Introductory Workshopaddresses the main aspects of the ESDM in a one-day didactic. It is designed for attendees from a variety of backgrounds, including professionals, parents, and other interested parties. It is not intended to train providers to fidelity, but is one step in this process.The cost for this one-day workshop is $300 per person (+ service fees). At the heart of the ESDM is the empirical knowledge-base of infant-toddler learning and development and the effects of early autism. ESDM intervention is typically provided in the home by trained therapists and parents during natural play and daily routines. ESDM is a relationship-based intervention, andinvolves parents and families. The aim of ESDM is to increase the rate of development in all domains for children with ASD as it simultaneously aims to decrease the symptoms of autism. In particular, this intervention focuses on boosting childrens social-emotional, cognitive, and language skills, as development in these domains is particularly affected by autism. ESDM also uses a data based approach and empirically supported teaching practices that have been found effective from research in applied behavior analysis. In partnership with The Nutrition Center, The Mount is presenting a week-long Food Adventures summer programAugust 10 August 14.

Food Adventures at The Mount occurs over the course of five days: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration and cost is for all five classes together.

Join us for a week-long, hands-on cooking series designed especially for school-age children(ages 7-12)located on the beautiful grounds of The Mount. Children will learn basic cooking skills and nutrition concepts while focusing on ideas that were near and dear to Edith Whartons heart: a reverence for tradition, the importance of home cooking, gathering around a beautiful table, and eating mindful, sociable meals with friends and family. Food Adventures will provide all of the ingredients for a memorable summer workshop that encourages kids to explore seasonal eating, the magic of whole foods, making healthy and delicious desserts, and one of Whartons favorite elements of entertaining: menu planning. We will take advantage of the bounty of local produce as well as the historic setting in which kids can embrace the fun of food.

Lutz illuminates the complex and fascinating lives of the Bronts through the things they wore, stitched, wrote on, and inscribed. By unfolding the histories of the meaningful objects in their family home in Haworth, she re-creates the sisters daily lives while moving us chronologically forward through the major biographical events: the death of their mother and two sisters, the imaginary kingdoms of their childhood writing, their time as governesses, and their determined efforts to make a mark on the literary world. From the miniature books they made as children to the blackthorn walking sticks they carried on solitary hikes on the moors, each personal possession opens a window onto the sisters world, their beloved fiction, and the Victorian era. A description of the brass collar worn by Emilys bull mastiff, Keeper, leads to a series of entertaining anecdotes about the influence of the familys dogs on their writing and about the relationship of Victorians to their pets in general. The sisters portable writing desks prove to have played a crucial role in their writing lives: it was Charlottes snooping in Emilys desk that led to the sisters first publication in print, followed later by the publication of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. He has experience consulting for Fortune-class companies, such as Merrill Lynch, Fidelity, John Hancock, SSGA, Cessna Aircraft, Bell Helicopter, McKesson, and GE Healthcare (formerly IDX). Intro to Sewing Machines AUGUST
Description: Have you always wanted to sew your own clothes but just didn't know where to start? Do you have your mom's old sewing machine sitting in the corner collecting dust because you don't know how to use it? Sick of throwing clothes away because of a minor tear, or taking your pants to a tailor to get hemmed? In this class, you'll learn the basic skills to get you started with cutting and pinning fabric, and using a sewing machine. To teach these skills, we will be making drawstring waist PJ or lounge pants. Class Goals: By the end of this class, you'll know how to thread a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, use a few different stitches on the machines, make a button hole, and cut and pin fabric. Prerequisites: Students must be at least 18 years of age. Materials: Students should come to the first class with 3 yards of flannel or woven cotton (or cotton/poly blend) fabric. Do not buy a knit fabric or fleece. Quilting fabrics work well. Sewfisticated has a wide variety of inexpensive fabrics; they are located at Twin City Plaza in Somerville and at Lamberts Plaza in Dorchester. (If you are making the pants for a child, someone especially petite, or someone especially large, you may need more or less fabric. Your instructor can be emailed with any questions about the fabric.) You will also need to bring to class a comfortable to loose-fitting pair of pants that we will use to make a pattern. If you wish to make the pants for someone else, please bring a pair of their pants to class. Instructor Biography: Carolyn Emberley sewed her first wallet by hand with some of her mom's quilting scraps and embroidery floss in the third grade. In addition to learning that embroidery floss is not the correct thing to use as thread, she learned to use her mother's sewing machine later that year, and has been sewing things ever since. She has a BFA in Studio Art from UMass Amherst. For most of her time there, she taught a variety of classes at the Student Union Craft Center, including sewing. In partnership with The Nutrition Center, The Mount is presenting a week-long Food Adventures summer programAugust 10 August 14. Food Adventures at The Mount occurs over the course of five days: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration and cost is for all five classes together. Join us for a week-long, hands-on cooking series designed especially for school-age children(ages 7-12)located on the beautiful grounds of The Mount. Food Adventures will provide all of the ingredients for a memorable summer workshop that encourages kids to explore seasonal eating, the magic of whole foods, making healthy and delicious desserts, and one of Whartons favorite elements of entertaining: menu planning. Designing for Future Climates: Resilient Facilities, Communities, and Economies
Addressing climate change has often focused on public policy related to greenhouse gas emission controls and other issues seemingly out of most peoples' hands. By focusing on regulations rather than the role of designers and project owners who shape the economy's underpinnings, we miss opportunities to improve how buildings, infrastructure, and business processes affect and are being affected by the changing climate. Our investments regarding the built environment and its energy supplies shape future climate conditions. From warming oceans and weather extremes, to urban floods and regional droughts, threats related to climate change pose serious impacts to communities and businesses. Examples of sustainable solutions exist for reducing impacts while improving value, yet they remain outside standard practices. In the course, participants will examine practical strategies that work, and learn how to more broadly apply them.
