About New Salem
map
The Town of New Salem Massachusetts was founded in 1753 and is located in Franklin County.

Those in the area should visit the Swift River Valley Historical Society for a piece of town history. Also visit the Bears Den which is a 100 foot deep gorge that was carved by the swift river cascading off granite cliffs and this was also said to be the meeting place for Indian Tribes.

The town remains to be a quiet rural bedroom community.

Dana Lyn and Kyle Sanna WITH Eric McDonald and Ryan McKasson
This is going to be some night of virtuosic playing. Maybe you know these players already, but if you don't, this is one of those shows where I say COME ON OUT! You wont regret it. The chops on these four individually; phenomenal. They are two separate duos, but at The Burren, anything goes, and the mind boggles at the thought of them doing a tune or two together. Dana Lyn and Kyle Sanna connect the dots between their experience as composers and improvisers in New York City's rich musical community and their deep admiration for traditional Irish music. The duo has collaborated with some of the greatest living interpreters of Irish music, including Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Cillian Vallely, Kevin Burke, and Susan McKeown. Take a look/listen here.... Ryan McKasson and Eric McDonald are masters of tradition who purposefully explore the dark corners floating on its edges. When they come together, the result is an alluring mix indeed full of spontaneity and improv with a sound compelling enough to transcend boundaries and appeal to music lovers of all stripes. Take a listen below... Don't miss this one. The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world. It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts. Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature. Ticket prices vary and there is a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code. Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!

Drop-In Adult Book Club

Please join us for the March Drop-in Book Club. This month we will be reading Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver.

Set in the present day in the rural community of Feathertown, Tennessee, this novel tells the story of Dellarobia Turnbow, a petite, razor-sharp 29-year-old who nurtured worldly ambitions before becoming pregnant and marrying at seventeen. Now, after more than a decade of tending to small children on a failing farm, oppressed by poverty, isolation and her husband's antagonistic family, she has mitigated her boredom by surrendering to an obsessive flirtation with a handsome younger man. In the opening scene, Dellarobia is headed for a secluded mountain cabin to meet this man and initiate what she expects will be a self-destructive affair. But the tryst never happens. Instead, she walks into something on the mountainside she cannot explain or understand: a forested valley filled with a lake of silent red fire that appears to her a miracle. In reality, the forest is ablaze with millions of butterflies. Their usual migratory route has been disrupted, and what looks to be a stunningly beautiful view is really an ominous sign, for the Appalachian winter could prove to be the demise of the species. Her discovery of this phenomenon ignites a media and religious firestorm that changes her life forever. After years lived entirely in the confines of one small house, Dellarobia finds her path suddenly opening out, chapter by chapter, into blunt and confrontational engagement with her family, her church, her town, her continent, and finally the world at large.

If you register more than 1 week before the class begins, you're eligible for the "Early Bird" discount of $85. Sessions: Session #1 (Thursday, March 3): Week One starts things off right with some Burlesque Basics. You'll learn that classic burlesque move, The Bump, plus how to turn your everyday steps into struts and slinky walks. For the striptease lesson, you'll be learning how to remove Long Gloves. We'll have some loaner gloves available, but if you've got a pair of your own, please bring them! Session #2 (Thursday, March 10): This week's move is The Grind, those oh-so teasing and pleasing types of hip circles that are essential to classic burlesque. Combine it with Week One's lesson, you get the classic "bump 'n' grind". Week Two's striptease lessons are on Skirts and Shirts. Please bring a skirt with a zipper and a blouse with buttons. Since you'll be removing your clothes, you may want to wear shorts or leggings and a tank top underneath or fancy lingerie, depending on your comfort level. Session #3 (Thursday, March 17): This week's move is The Shimmy, how to quiver and shake to the delight of your audience. We'll continue to build up our movement vocabulary that now includes both bumps and grinds. Week Three's striptease lesson is all about Stockings. Please bring a pair of thigh-high stockings to class. After you learn some Floorwork to highlight your lovely gams, we'll practice the provocative stocking remove. Session #4 (Thursday, March 24): This week's move is Tassel Twirling -- the ultimate burlesque trick! You will need to bring pasties with tassels to class for this. We'll have a few pairs for sale. If you're uncomfortable appearing in just pasties, please wear a close-fitting tank-top under your bra and affix the pasties to that. It's harder to twirl, but we don't want anyone struggling beyond their comfort level. Week Four's striptease lesson is Removing a Bra. Please bring a back-fastening bra to class. See the above note about pasties and comfort levels. That applies here too. For extra fun, we'll be playing with Feather Boas, that quintessential burlesque accessory. If you have a boa, by all means bring it, but we'll also have some loner boas and a few for sale.

Sandra is the third of four daughters of renowned teacher and publisher Robert W. Boynton, M.A.T.'47, who received his Masters of Arts in Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Series Description

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have been contributing 0.59 +/- 0.20 mm/yr to global mean sea level since 1992. In the late 1990s, Greenland's fastest outlet glacier, Jakobshavn Glacier, began to flow faster into the ocean at the same time the West Greenland Current appeared to suddenly warm, based on summer CTD surveys along the coast, suggesting that ice discharge was controlled by ocean-induced melting at the glacier terminus. To investigate this, we collected in situ observations of fjord water properties near the marine terminus of Jakobshavn Glacier from 2009 to 2013. We confirmed that most of the 800 m tall face of the glacier terminus is exposed to water masses known to have warmed in the 1990s. However, although the glacier has relentlessly accelerated and retreated since the late 1990s, the fjord water properties have not remained uniformly warm. Indeed, in summer of 2010, the fjord temporarily cooled to temperatures last present in the 1980s. Besides showing that the glacier is not controlled inter-annually by ocean temperatures, this isolated anomaly showed that this fjord is renewal at least annually, despite the shallow sill at its entrance. Numerical modelling suggests the glacier itself drives this renewal: in summer, subglacial meltwater enters the fjord at depth and drives an overturning circulation that drives all the fjord basin water over the sill in about one month. Fjord waters thus track the external waters inter-annually. Using in situ observat
